The last decade of the history of artificial intelligence:

Over the past decade, there has been a lot of research and development in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), in the everyday life, as the modern industry, or in the  science. However, the application of AI brings not only benefits but also challenges. The use of AI in the world of work may also brings risks, for example, replacing human labour with machines may mean that many current occupations will no longer be needed in the future. Work processes will be carried out entirely by thinking machines.

The big question for the future is what happens to jobs where human thinking, creativity and uniqueness are the most important skills. Will artificial intelligence be able to replace humans here as well?

To answer this question, let’s summarize the main results of artificial intelligence research in the years between 2010 and 2020.

The application of AI has appeared in many areas, such as self-driving cars, voice recognition systems, facial recognition systems and computer games. There has also been great progress in the field of OCR (Optical Character Recognition), where it is enough to transmit the output signal of a camera to the first layer of neurons, and the output layer is connected to the response.

Among the advantages of OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology is that it allows printed texts to be digitized, which makes it easier to store and manage data. OCR technology also allows you to search for texts, which greatly facilitates the review of documents. Using OCR technology can reduce errors that can occur when manually transcribing data. The use of OCR technology can also save time, since the text is automatically digitized and does not need to be transcribed manually.

Among the achievements of AI research since 2012, the development of a program called AlphaGo, which won the World Championship of the game Go, stands out.

Another important result of AI research concerns a language model called GPT-3 developed by OpenAI. GPT-3 has the ability to generate text similar to human text. One of today’s most exciting, mass-accessible applications is ChatGPT, which is capable of creating text and replacing learning in an almost human way – so it quickly became a favorite of students with lack of time all over the world.

Among the world-class centers for artificial intelligence research, the MIT AI Lab in the United States is one of the most important centers. 

OpenAI is a leading center for artificial intelligence research, aiming to develop and apply AI in ways that benefit society. OpenAI’s goal is to develop AI technology transparently and make it open source – accessible to everyone. A language model developed by OpenAI (GPT-3, see the previous block) has the ability to generate texts similar to human. GPT-3 has the ability to generate short stories, songs, press releases, technical manuals, text in the style of certain writers and even computer code.

OpenAI aims to advance AI technology for the benefit of society and facilitate AI research. However, OpenAI’s research is not only related to language models, but also to research related to robotics, game development, autonomous vehicles and AI safety.

Oxford University’s Machine Learning Research Group is one of the leading centres for AI research in Europe. AI Singapore is one of the leading centers for artificial intelligence research in Asia.
